The Mountain View School District Board of Trustees unanimously voted to approve the $2.9 million levy for each of the next two school years. If this levy passes in May, the school district will be able to offer the educational experience that it is currently offering today.
Supplemental levies for Idaho schools are not anomalies, but necessities. Property taxes have funded public education in Idaho for decades (See article: Why Do We Even Have Levies?). The funding model changed this in 2007 (when House Bill 1 was put in effect). It was successful in LOWERING property taxes, even when communities pass supplemental levies for public schools. This opportunity for local funding and control over school districts is unique to Idaho. This is small government working as it should, giving buy-in and responsibility to citizens here in our home communities where the schools are and the kids live.
On March 11th, at a special board meeting, our school board did the right thing for our community. We extend our sincere gratitude to the entire board, and we are so appreciative of the time each of the board members spent researching in order to make a logical, informed decision.
We ask the board to continue this act of leadership and to work together as a united front to fund our schools and give local kids the educational experience they deserve. It’s time to mend our community and bring us back together.
